ISO 31000 (Risk Management) Is Getting A Makeover, Standard Now Under Revision

As you may be aware, ISO standards come up for revision every five years.  ISO 9001: 2015 is currently set to release at the end of 2015 and that revision’s framework will impact many other related standards.  ISO 31000 and its accompanying Guide 73 on risk management terminology, are no exception.

    Risk Management

The working group responsible for developing core risk management standards convened in Paris, France from March 3-9, under the auspices of AFNOR to discuss the necessary changes to be made to the standard.  Why?

Reducing, anticipating and managing risk are all part of the daily grind for organizations that have integrated risk management into their business strategy.

That’s why many organizations turn to ISO 31000 on risk management to support their management objectives.  Risk-based thinking and risk management are C-suite imperatives.  It’s also no surprise that the latest revision of ISO 9001: 2015 is centered around risk-based thinking.  Risk-based thinking builds the concept of risk into the whole management system and makes preventive action part of the routine.

To learn more about what’s in store for the revision of ISO 31000 (at this beginning stage), read the article here on ISO.org.

ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety (Draft): The Voting Has Begun

As you may be aware, the forthcoming standard from ISO on workplace safety has reached the committee draft stage of development.  ISO 45001 is poised to replace OHSAS 18001.

The standard sets forth requirements for occupational health and safety management systems.  ISO 45001 is currently at the committee draft stage of development, the first consultation phase.  During this stage, the countries (ISO members) that have chosen to participate in the standard’s development, can comment on the draft.

Many people have asked, why an “international standard”?

According to ISO.org, here is a great visual example:

The reality is that around 2.34 million people died as a result of work-related accidents and diseases in 2013 alone.  Approximately 2 million are the result of work-related illnesses and 321, 000 are due to accidents.

A strong occupational health and safety management system can bring these numbers down by reducing accidents and ill health linked to the workplace.  ISO 45001 will provide requirements to put in place a system and structure that protects and reduces risk to employees.

There are many benefits to an ISO standard for occupational health and safety.

Two that we believe are worthy of focus are:

    1.  Small businesses often have only one person looking after both safety and environmental concerns, so the committee is making sure that easy integration with ISO 14001 is possible.  The cross-functionality with ISO 14001 is a true positive.

    2.  Many organizations are already using ISO management system standards, which will make integrating a similar standard on occupational health and safety much easier vs. maintaining a different guideline like OHSAS 18001.

This is just the second step, in a multi-phase process, with much more to come.  For more information, you can access this page from ISO to download the briefing note.  Stay tuned, as we will post any additional updates as they occur.

As you may be aware the seminars, workshops and webinars have begun!  Many consultants are helping clients prepare for the impending changes with the ISO 9001:2015 revision.  ASQ and the American Quality Institute hosted the ISO 9001 World Conference on March 8-10 in Houston.  We facilitated our own “Intro To ISO 9001:2015” webinar earlier in March and will repeat this complimentary webinar on November 6, 2015.

How ISO Develops Quality Standards: 5 Stages Of Development (Video)

When we first got notice of this video, we didn’t know if we should laugh– or gasp.  The development of ISO standard is certainly a complicated process and probably worthy of distillation for the masses—but sock puppets, with names?  We couldn’t help but share ISO’s recent video on how world quality standards are developed.  While it’s a tongue and cheek video with actual sock puppets, the host does a very good job of breaking it all down and clearly defines the 5 stages of quality standards development.  Learn (and laugh)…

Seriously….here are the 5 stages of development:

    1. New Work Item Proposal (NWIP) Stage

    2. The Working Document (WD) Stage

    3. The Committee Draft  (CD) Stage

    4. The Draft International Standard (DIS) Stage

    5. Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) Stage

For a detailed explanation of the various stages, click the image link below to go to ISO’s documentation page:

5 Stages Of Quality Standards Development

For more information on implementing ISO standards, contact info@bizphyx.com.  We promise that sock puppets will not respond to your request for information!
