The “Year Of Quality” In Review: Quality Predictions For 2016

As we bring the “Year of Quality” to a close, we would like to reflect on the flurry of activity that has occurred in ICT quality and quality management in general.  We’ve been finalizing our own strategic planning for the new business year and we’re fresh off of the QuEST Forum Leadership Council and Work Group Meetings in November.

    BIZPHYX: The Year of Quality

The latest revision of ISO 9001, ISO 9001:2015 is going to set the stage for quality in general.  As you probably know, the revision was published in September and organizations have 3 years to upgrade their ISO 9001:2008 QMS to the latest revision.  In addition, ISO 14001:2015 was published and many more ISO based standards ready to update in 2016, are in the queue to align with the latest revision (AS 9100, OHSAS 18001 shifting to ISO 45001, etc.).  Just refer to the Annex SL directives with the latest revision.

With regard to TL 9000, it too is set to upgrade in September 2016 with R6.0.  While we see alignment with ISO 9001:2015, we also know that sustainability and other ICT specific quality drivers will be in the mix.  We suggest that our ICT clients certified to ISO 9001 and TL 9000, wait until after September of 2016 before making any big decisions.  We can then suggest how to best assist with upgrades regarding both standards (in tandem).

With regard to QuEST Forum, there is a new Executive Board for 2016 and with that change of guard will come a potential shift to new initiatives with the organization, likely with increased sustainability initiatives, benchmarking and performance data measurements.

Specific standards aside, it is important that ALL organizations consider these factors in 2016:

-supply chain risk due to the global supply chain

    -business globalization in general

-network data security and transctional data security

-risk based thinking (reflected in ISO 9001:2015)

-sustainability initiatives and in some cases, environmental regulation

-data management (example: tele-health and e-health companies)

-safety in ICT (example: cell tower safety in the wireless sector)

-electronics waste (example: auditable recycling standards like R2, which apply to applicable ICT recyclers)

-customer churn (all telecom sectors, wireless, OTT, etc.)

-evolving technologies and speed to market, executed with quality performance

We predict that our ICT clients will have an easier time upgrading to ISO 9001:2015 than expected or feared.  However, we also predict that due to economic drivers, global environmental concerns and US regulation; companies will need to strongly consider and develop sustainability goals and address environmental challenges.

Right now that can be done on a voluntary basis by implementing standards like ISO 14001 and when applicable R2 (electronics recyclers).

Additionally, rampant data and identity theft, as well as surveillance concerns, will increase the potential for direct burdens on companies, not just the big players and MSPs (example: new card readers, PCI compliance).

Also consider the rapid evolution of M2M and IoT products and services.  When and how does quality shift to outright legal responsibility?  Right now information security can be helped on a voluntary basis with an entire suite of compliance standards and techniques, including ISO 27001 (when applicable).

The unknown will be when quality management and assurance shift to forced governmental compliance and regulation.

Are we there yet?  Probably not in 2016, but it’s likely coming.  How to get prepared?  Recognize that quality is congruent with an organization’s responsibility to serve and protect clients, as well as be good stewards of the environment.

Implementing a baseline quality management system is a strong first step within an organization to shift a corporate culture to perform at high levels and mitigate risk every day, in every way.  This is done though the leadership of an organization.  ISO 9001:2015 addresses these factors head on through a focus on risk based thinking and leadership (stakeholders)Concepts to ponder before the new calendar year!

BIZPHYX will be there to assist you every step of the way in 2016.  For more information on implementing ISO 9001:2015 or TL 9000 in 2016, contact info@bizphyx.com

    Happy New Year!

ISO 31000 (Risk Management) Is Getting A Makeover, Standard Now Under Revision

As you may be aware, ISO standards come up for revision every five years.  ISO 9001: 2015 is currently set to release at the end of 2015 and that revision’s framework will impact many other related standards.  ISO 31000 and its accompanying Guide 73 on risk management terminology, are no exception.

    Risk Management

The working group responsible for developing core risk management standards convened in Paris, France from March 3-9, under the auspices of AFNOR to discuss the necessary changes to be made to the standard.  Why?

Reducing, anticipating and managing risk are all part of the daily grind for organizations that have integrated risk management into their business strategy.

That’s why many organizations turn to ISO 31000 on risk management to support their management objectives.  Risk-based thinking and risk management are C-suite imperatives.  It’s also no surprise that the latest revision of ISO 9001: 2015 is centered around risk-based thinking.  Risk-based thinking builds the concept of risk into the whole management system and makes preventive action part of the routine.

To learn more about what’s in store for the revision of ISO 31000 (at this beginning stage), read the article here on ISO.org.

ISO 45001: Occupational Health and Safety (Draft): The Voting Has Begun

As you may be aware, the forthcoming standard from ISO on workplace safety has reached the committee draft stage of development.  ISO 45001 is poised to replace OHSAS 18001.

The standard sets forth requirements for occupational health and safety management systems.  ISO 45001 is currently at the committee draft stage of development, the first consultation phase.  During this stage, the countries (ISO members) that have chosen to participate in the standard’s development, can comment on the draft.

Many people have asked, why an “international standard”?

According to ISO.org, here is a great visual example:

The reality is that around 2.34 million people died as a result of work-related accidents and diseases in 2013 alone.  Approximately 2 million are the result of work-related illnesses and 321, 000 are due to accidents.

A strong occupational health and safety management system can bring these numbers down by reducing accidents and ill health linked to the workplace.  ISO 45001 will provide requirements to put in place a system and structure that protects and reduces risk to employees.

There are many benefits to an ISO standard for occupational health and safety.

Two that we believe are worthy of focus are:

    1.  Small businesses often have only one person looking after both safety and environmental concerns, so the committee is making sure that easy integration with ISO 14001 is possible.  The cross-functionality with ISO 14001 is a true positive.

    2.  Many organizations are already using ISO management system standards, which will make integrating a similar standard on occupational health and safety much easier vs. maintaining a different guideline like OHSAS 18001.

This is just the second step, in a multi-phase process, with much more to come.  For more information, you can access this page from ISO to download the briefing note.  Stay tuned, as we will post any additional updates as they occur.

Risk, Organizational Culture and Small Business: A Perspective On ISO 9001:2015

As you may be aware the seminars, workshops and webinars have begun!  Many consultants are helping clients prepare for the impending changes with the ISO 9001:2015 revision.  ASQ and the American Quality Institute hosted the ISO 9001 World Conference on March 8-10 in Houston.  We facilitated our own “Intro To ISO 9001:2015” webinar earlier in March and will repeat this complimentary webinar on November 6, 2015.

Here is a link to an ASQ TV video featuring Denise Robitaille, who has been a member of the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to Technical Committee 176 (TAG 176) for more than 10 years and has worked on standards internationally.  Everyone is providing their input on a significant change to the standard, Risk Based Thinking:

ISO 14001 Also Moves To FDIS Stage: Video Update and Supporting Documents from ISO

As a result of the November 2014 announcement that ISO 9001:2015 had moved to the FDIS, ISO recently announced that ISO 14001, (the environmental management standard) has also moved to the FDIS stage (Final Draft International Standard).

Here is that video update from ISO.org:

This video features Anne Marie Warris, Chair of the subcommittee reviewing ISO 14001.  She briefly explains what is new and what’s next for the standard.  You can also click here to read a summary statement in a brief Q & A format from ISO on what’s new with ISO 14001.  Like the ISO 9001:2015 revision, changes to ISO 14001 include a focus on risk-based thinking.

The new version will include a requirement to understand the organization’s context in order to better manage risk, with more emphasis made on leaders within organizations to promote environmental management.  In addition there will be a shift towards improving environmental performance rather than improving the management system.

ISO published the July 2014 ISO/TC 207/SC 1 scope document on the ISO 14001 changes at a conceptual level.  You can download that document by clicking the image below to obtain it off of our Knowledge Center:

ISO 14001 July 2014 Scope Document

Further updates will also be posted on our “Countdown To ISO 9001:2015” support page.  If you require any further information on ISO 14001, please contact info@bizphyx.com.

BIZPHYX Launches “Countdown To ISO 9001: 2015” Support Page

The impending ISO 9001:2015 revision, which is proceeding through various stages, has prompted questions by many of our certified clients and readers.  Until the final standard is published at the end of 2015, it is hard to know everything that will stand.  As of January 2015, it appears that the new structure (10 clauses) and the focus on risk-based thinking will remain.  Implementation and audit perspectives are still to be resolved.  You can read a previous article on our blog about the changes as they were published with the DIS.

We felt it was important to create a landing page with a clearinghouse of “available to the public” news releases, supporting documents, presentations, commentaries and videos from ISO.org and other thought leaders such as CBOs like NQA and stakeholder organizations like ASQ (The American Society for Quality).

Click on the image link below to connect to this new page on our website:

    Countdown To ISO 9001:2015

We will update this page throughout 2015 as new resources are posted.  On this page, you will also find information on upcoming webinars that we’re offering in 2015 to help clients strategically prepare for the new standard.  These webinars on ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001 are complimentary resources that we encourage you to take advantage of.  It is important to note that the ISO 9001:2015 revision has a way to go before publication and the new version of TL 9000 (R6.0) can’t be fully developed until the final ISO 9001 revision is published.

Once published, new organizations will have 3 years to transition their quality management system over to the new version(s).

That being said, education and preparation are things you can do now, which is why we’ve developed this resource, so bookmark this new page!

BIZPHYX will be there to assist clients with all aspects of the revision, including new implementations to the latest version.  For more information on ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or TL 9000, please contact info@bizphyx.com.
